Simulations are used to increase efficiency over the entire vehicle life cycle and minimize risks. Softing offers solutions for the diagnostic simulation of ECUs and vehicles to enable the process-safe regression testing of diagnostic testers, the simpler commissioning of test sequences and the best possible training of employees.
Regular software updates ensure that diagnostic testers are assigned all the latest functions. For the tester’s regression test, all required ECUs and their communication partners must be available in entirety and in all variants to ensure sufficient test coverage. However, in practice this is almost impossible, and can lead to considerable delays in the creation of test sequences or even to a complete test failure. Diagnostic simulation is thus key when it comes to being able to perform regression tests on service testers in the required depth.
Along with regression tests, creating test sequences along the entire value chain is a major challenge. Here too, there is often no counterpart for testing. But particularly in the test environment, the test methodology should be developed at an early stage so that function tests can be run as soon as the Device under Test (DuT) is available. Using a simulation means that test sequences can already be created and verified during ECU engineering. The entire communication path, including VCI and cabling, is tested to exclude all sources of error.
Simulations are also used during in-house training courses for OEM employees as well as for repair shop workers. Different vehicles – and that also means different brands and variants – are regularly needed in such scenarios. Simulation is used where these are difficult to obtain or keep in stock. Participants can then learn about diagnostics in a training room without having to block a car hoist for demonstration purposes.
Increased efficiency with frontloading in test creation
Increase in quality by enabling 100% testing
Increase in test quality thanks to various configuration possibilities
Verification of the entire communication path
In the ‘ECU Life Cycle’, the ECU or its communication environment does not yet exist, which makes it difficult to create test sequences
Regression tests cannot be performed to the required test depth because not all ECUs and vehicle variants to be tested are available
Enormous effort to provide different vehicles and vehicle variants (different software status, state of assembly, software configuration) for training employees
Readjustment of control units or vehicles with regard to diagnostic behavior
Regression test to verify the correct behavior of the diagnostic software after reimplementation
Verification of the entire communication path including VCI and peripherals
Efficient verification of test routines in the ECU engineering phase so that tests can be started as soon as the DuT arrives
Simulation of different vehicles – even of different brands and variants – for employee training sessions

Softing TCS is the diagnostic simulation for all cases where no ECU or vehicle is available, for example for test preparation, regression testing or in training and teaching facilities.
By using a simulation in test preparation, these can already be verified together with the entire test setup during the development of test routines. Thus, when the device under test (DuT) arrives, the actual test can be started immediately. Time-consuming loops for debugging are obsolete. The use of simulation files with integrated diagnostic protocols enables simple variant generation with minimal setup times.
To ensure that the existing functionality of the tester has not been compromised by new implementations, all vehicle variants are simulated in all software variants for the regression test. This allows the correct behavior of the tester to be verified.
During training of employees (OEM, work shops), all desired models as well as their characteristics can be mapped with a suitable simulation file – in the training room and without blocking a lifting platform.
