Increase of data rate as extension to well-known CAN standard

Bus system CAN FD ISO 11898-1Large data volumes and the enormous speed of diagnostic communication in vehicles are shaping the automotive industry. CAN is and has been a reliable bus system for decades now and has asserted itself as the standard bus system. However, the efficiency of the classical CAN bus does not meet today’s requirements when it comes to the data transfer rate.

CAN with flexible data rate (CAN FD) overcomes the limitations of the classical CAN bus in terms of data transfer rate. In practice the data throughput of CAN FD is six times higher than classical CAN, depending on the network topology.

Enhanced efficiency is achieved by extending the data array from 8 bytes up to 64 bytes and an increased bit rate of up to 8 Mbit/s during payload transmission. With these specifications, CAN FD can process greater quantities of diagnostic data, and saves both time and costs. CAN FD can be used with both 11-bit identifiers and 29-bit identifiers.

Information on the current status of standardization (CiA)

  • CiA has submitted PGN (parameter group number) requests to the SAE j1939 committee for its CiA 602-2 specification (Mapping J1939 to CAN FD).
  • Unfortunately, the new ISO 11898-2 standard has not been published. The project lead is due to deliver the last proof on December 9. If there were no new comments, it could be published before the end of the year or in the very first weeks of 2017.
  • ISO 16845-1 (conformance test plan for Classical CAN and CAN FD) has been published.
